Who we are – We are dedicated to our mission to celebrate the lives of those we have the privilege of serving by providing superior care and superior services to each patient and family. We are supportive, respectful and encouraging; characteristics that allow us to provide the highest levels of hospitality and warmth to our patients and their families. Our vision is to be a world class organization.
What we are looking for – Volunteers to join our team! Volunteers are truly the heart of hospice care. From the beginning, volunteers have played a vital role as members of the hospice care team. Just like our patients, hospice volunteers represent all ages, religions, and ethnic backgrounds. Each brings unique skills and experiences to the volunteer role of their choosing.
Volunteers are special people with a nobility of character and a gentleness of soul that makes them a very special part of Ohio’s Hospice of Miami County. They are “someone like me” to the patient and family – a listening ear, a friendly visitor, a fresh perspective – in a difficult time.
Because Ohio’s Hospice of Miami County offers several opportunities for volunteers, you may donate as much time as you wish. The duties of patient care, special projects, office and bereavement volunteers vary. This allows you to choose the area of service that suits you and your unique schedule, as well as find the area that is most rewarding to you.
Consider using your skills and time to help in one of the following areas :
Patient Care—Make visits to patients and families at their place of residence for companionship and to give the caregiver a much needed break. Visit patients in facilities, read to them, or help with feeding.
Petals of Sunshine—Join other volunteers to assemble and deliver flower arrangements to patients.
Caring Companion Program—Volunteers offer our patients and families respite, not only during the patient’s dying process, but also when urgent companionship is needed.
Bereavement—Work with our Pathways of HopeSM Grief Counseling Center. Offer bereavement visits and phone calls to bereaved family members. Assist with adult, children and teen bereavement programs.
Events—Assist with hospice-sponsored and community events.
Office support—Assist with office duties and mailings.
Join a Facility Team—Visit our patients that reside in skilled care and assisted living facilities to simply chat, read to them and spend time with them.
We Honor Veterans—Did you serve in the United States Armed Forces? If so, help us honor our veteran patients with special pinning ceremonies, during which we thank them for their service and present them with a pin and an American flag.
Errands and Light Housekeeping—Offer a helping hand by running errands for a patient, or tidying up their home.
“My Story” Audio/Video Recording—Interview patients who want to tell their story and create a true and lasting gift for their family.
Pet Therapy—Bring comfort and peace to patients and families by becoming a certified therapy team with your pet. Blue (pictured below) has cheered up many of our patients and their families.
Special Patient Services—From massage therapy and Reiki to barber and beautician services, we can use just about anyone’s unique skill to help our patients and their families. Do you have a skill or talent you could offer?
Hospice Volunteer Training consists of a one day, 8 hour orientation with sessions being held once a week for four weeks. Volunteers wishing to assist with grief support activities require additional training. Volunteer training is held at various times throughout the year.
Bereavement volunteers assistance with daytime and evening programs/activities offered by the Pathways of HopeSM Grief Counseling Center. As mentioned above, after receiving specialized bereavement training (in addition to the volunteer training), these volunteers can choose to serve in any of several areas including, but not limited to: 1) Visiting bereaved clients (home or facility visits); 2) Assisting with weekly children or teen support groups held in the evenings; 3) Serving at special events (health fairs, Riverwalk, Butterfly Service); 4) Providing food or light refreshments for Pathways of Hope events. If you wish to become a bereavement volunteer, please contact the volunteer coordinator at 937.335.5191.
